Millions of Americans suffer from high blood pressure, a condition that dramatically increases the chances of serious heart disease and stroke. The Strong Heart & Vascular Center recognizes this threat and has many of the area’s top specialists treating high blood pressure as well as working to find new and promising ways to improve its treatment.
Treating high blood pressure without drugs. There are some very serious cases of high blood pressure where patients may not respond to medication. In cases such as this, a new technology called the Rheos Baroreflex Hypertension Therapy System may be the answer. This is a device that is implanted in the patient’s body, in much the same way that a pacemaker is. The device emits tiny electrodes that stimulate the patient’s carotid arteries, which then sends a message to the brain that causes the patient’s own natural systems to lower the blood pressure. This system not only holds promise for treating the most severe cases of high blood pressure, it is also an alternative to the use of blood pressure medications. Our dedication to providing the best solutions is why The Strong Heart & Vascular Center was the first in the nation to begin implanting this device. |

Preventing high blood pressure. Much of the work that goes into treating high blood pressure doesn’t happen at the hospital. Therefore, The Strong Heart & Vascular Center is involved in numerous programs that are helping people to change their lives in ways that prevent high blood pressure before it ever becomes a problem. We are currently involved in programs that help people find ways of making exercise a regular—and enjoyable—part of their daily lives, and programs that make healthy food choices easier to identify for more members of our community. |
